South Valley’s Louis Richard Rocco Memorial Park Rededicated Saturday

11/13/2015

The community and Commission Vice Chair Art De La Cruz rededicated the park named after Vietnam Veteran Louis Richard Rocco at a ceremony on Nov. 14. The park had new metal signage installed that helps to identify it more easily.

“Remembering Richard Rocco and paying tribute to all that he did for our country and our community is an honor,” says Commissioner Art De La Cruz. “The Louis Richard Rocco Medal of Honor Park will always be a place of reflection for his family, his comrades and all veterans who served the United States.”

Rocco received the Congressional Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military honor, in 1974. He is also a recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

The memorial park was originally dedicated in 2003. In the years following the park’s dedication, South Valley comrades of Richard Rocco raised money through donations to have a bust created that would memorialize their beloved friend. They donated the art piece to Bernalillo County and in 2013, the bust was installed as a permanent feature of the park.

Following the ceremony, Commissioner De La Cruz hosted the sixth annual Veterans' Appreciation Dinner for District 2 veterans at the Westside Community Center.
