County Cleans Up Majority of Rio Puerco Tire Dumpsite

05/27/2016

The Rio Puerco tire dumpsite in southwestern Bernalillo County was reduced by more than 23,600 tires after Bernalillo County crews cleaned up a major portion of the area last month.

Bernalillo County was awarded $62,243 in state grant funding for the removal and recycling of the thousands of tires that have been illegally dumped in the Rio Puerco.

“The environmental hazards caused by thousands of illegally dumped tires called for the county’s action,” Commission Chair Art De La Cruz says. “About three-quarters of the site has been cleaned up thanks in part to grant funding from our partners at the New Mexico Environment Department.”

Bernalillo County staff and 15 Community Custody Program (CCP) laborers were onsite for 12 days removing approximately 260 tons of tires, or about 23,637 tires. The tires were cleaned of the caked on dirt and transported to the tire recycling center where the tires were shredded and recycled. The tires did not end up in the landfill.

Tires still remain inside the Rio Puerco and arroyos. Bernalillo County is pursuing additional grants to fund the second phase of this cleanup.
