District 3

In 2009, Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins and local artist Sarah Hartford created the “District 3 Art Show” designed to showcase the artistic talents of Bernalillo County residents, particularly in her metro-area district.

The project has been an unabashed success. Since that time, Commissioner Hart Stebbins has hosted 39 art shows in a corridor leading to her offices on One Civic Plaza’s 10th floor featuring a wide range of media including oil and watercolor painting, lithography, weaving, and traditional Hispanic artworks such as papel picado and straw mosaics. The exhibits give local artists broad exposure to a wide range of visitors to county offices, and offer an ever-changing display of Bernalillo County’s outstanding artistic talent.

In her years on the County Commission, Hart Stebbins has highlighted the huge contribution of arts and culture to Bernalillo County’s economic base and has been a strong supporter of efforts to grow our creative economy. According to Creative New Mexico, a recent study by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis indicated that the arts and culture sector employs more than 43,000 people in central New Mexico and generated $3 billion, almost 4 percent of the state’s total economic activity, not to speak of its impact on tourism, a $6 billion industry in itself.

Additionally, Albuquerque ranks second among U.S. metropolitan areas in the density of visual arts.
