Lots of Folks Got Their Kicks on Route 66 at the Reels and Wheels Public Art Ribbon-Cutting and Block Party

On April 23, 2016, Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins and Bernalillo County Public Art invited the community to return to Route 66 and relive the fun of yesteryear at the Reels and Wheels Public Art ribbon-cutting and block party.

The event was held in front of the historic Hiland Theater, 4800 Central Ave. SE.

The Reels and Wheels public art piece serves a dual purpose as art and as the ABQ Ride bus shelter for the bus stop that is located directly in front of the Hiland Theater on Central Avenue. Riders waiting for the bus can sit on filmstrip spool-shaped stools that are inside of the giant movie reel.

Howard Meehan, the artist who designed and created the public art piece, was selected from a multi-state call for artists that included all of the states along Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles.

The block party and fifties fun included food trucks, 50s style music, a hula hoop contest and roller derby girls serving slices of pie. Free silk screenings that commemorated the public art piece were available to the community.
