Commissioner Hart Stebbins Monthly Luncheon Nov. 15 Features BernCo Open Space

10/30/2017

Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins invites you to her next monthly neighborhood luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 15, noon-1 p.m., at McKinley Community Center, 3401 Monroe NE, behind McKinley Middle School.

This month’s speaker is Colleen Langan, Bernalillo County Open Space Coordinator. Colleen will talk about the Open Space programs and the many events that are planned for the 20th Anniversary of Bernalillo County Open Space.

Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation owns and manages 13 very unique properties (1000 acres) from the mountains to the valley. It has also contributed to a number of other protected lands, including the Valle del Oro, the first urban wildlife refuge in the Southwest, and, of course, the UNM North Golf Course.

Open Space got its start when a 1998 referendum passed, providing 0.5 mill levy for two years and again in 2000 with a 0.25 mill levy for six years. The mission of the mill levy funds was to acquire and maintain open space for the benefit and enjoyment of Bernalillo County residents and visitors.

In November of 2014, Bernalillo County voters overwhelmingly passed a 0.20 mill levy for 15 years to “acquire, improve, operate and maintain natural areas, open space and cultural, historic and nature education sites within the County.” The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Facilities Master Plan adopted in October 2015 recommended that a "Greenprint" analysis be conducted to identify and prioritize open space lands for acquisition by the county using the 2014 mill levy funds.

The Open Space program was established in 2009. The program’s mission is to manage the properties to benefit people, plants and wildlife by protecting and enhancing viewsheds, water resources, wildlife habitat, cultural/historic sites, and prime agricultural land; and providing resource-based recreation and environmental education.

An RSVP to jhartley@bernco.gov is appreciated but not required.
