May Starts Busy Season in District 5

05/09/2016

Message from Vice Chair Wayne Johnson

I always look forward to Spring because it signals the start of the “busy” season in District 5. This past week was no exception. On Friday, evening, April 29, 2016, I spoke on public safety at the Classic Uptown Neighborhood Association’s Annual meeting. Approximately 60 residents attended the event. I was able to highlight the many prevention programs being utilized by our Sheriff’s Department and stress to cooperation among law enforcement agencies in battling crime.

On Saturday morning, I had the honor of hosting the “Moving Your Products Out of New Mexico” business summit. Small business owners, entrepreneurs and government officials learned how to grow their businesses by exporting their goods and services.  New Mexican businesses have unique products which can compete in a global market. Their success translates into success for the county and the state. Bernalillo County has striven to create an environment by which businesses, of all sizes, have a chance to prosper.

Sunday, May 1, 2016 featured the unique and artistic qualities of our residents. I participated in a birthday celebration for Muriel Zimmer.  She is 100 years young. Muriel is very vibrant. She is still driving, very active in the ceramic program of her residence community and attends church every Sunday.

That afternoon, I presented Bernalillo County’s Public Art Collection Purchase Awards to six extremely gifted and talented high school students. The county’s program purchased their works which now will become part of our permanent art collection.  It was inspiring to participate in the ceremony and be able to see the quality of their photographic projects.

Tuesday, May 3 2016, we honored the fallen public safety officers of our community. The program was presented by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and the Albuquerque Police Department. This year’s ceremony was very emotional and touching in that our own deputy, Michelle Carlino-Webster’s husband, APD officer Daniel Scott Webster, lost his life this past year.  Our deputy Robin Hopkins was able to participate in the ceremony.  Robin suffered injuries while involved in car chase trying to apprehend a very serious criminal in October 2013. When I see Robin and Michelle and all of our public safety officers, I realize the tremendous sacrifice they have made and are making to keep us safe.  I pray that they return home safe to their families and thank them for their service to our community.
