Commissioner Johnson Sponsors Acknowledgement of Fire Prevention Week

At its Sept. 22, 2015 Administrative Meeting, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners acknowledged October 4 - 10, 2015, as "Fire Prevention Week".

According to the National Fire Protection Association, our own homes are where we are most at risk for fires - in 2013, home fires killed 2,755 people nationwide. In all, the nation's fire departments responded to more than 369,000 home fires.

Roughly half of home fire deaths resulted from fires reported from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., when most people are asleep. And many of the deadliest fires occurred in homes with no fire alarms; or with alarms that were deactivated, held dead batteries, or were disconnected.

The 2015 Fire Prevention Week theme is "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep - Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm." Commissioners urged all Bernalillo County residents to protect their homes and families by heeding the important safety messages provided by the Bernalillo County Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association.
