BernCo Water Fair Happening April 8 - 9, 2016

04/07/2016

Public Works Natural Resource Services Program will be hosting a water fair this Friday, April 8 from noon – 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 9 from 9 a.m. – noon at the McGrane Safety Complex, 48 Public School Road, Tijeras. The public is encouraged to attend this free community event.

The BernCo Water Fair will feature well water testing, a well expo and a well education course.

“Water is a very important resource for all of our residents but even more so for individuals who live in the East Mountains.  Many of these residents are served by their own private well,” Commissioner Wayne Johnson states.  “The opportunity to have their private well tested to determine if their water is safe to drink is an important service that the county can provide to its residents.”

County hydrogeologist Sara Chudnoff, who created this event, was recently lauded by blog "The Private Well Class" for her innovative ways of communicating with county residents. Commissioner Johnson said of the recognition: "Congratulations to Sara - much of her work is in the East Mountain area."

Private well owners can take in a sample of their well water for testing (minimum one liter) and results will be returned by mail to the resident.

The well expo will have representatives from the New Mexico Department of Health, Sandia National Laboratories, the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer and more, who can answer questions and provide demonstrations related to all things water and wells.

The well education course will teach about proper well ownership and understanding well water quality.

For questions or to register for the event, please contact Sara Chudnoff, county hydrogeologist, at (505) 224-1614 or via email at schudnoff@bernco.gov .
