Proposal to Change the Name of East Mountain Library in Tijeras to Tomás Herrera Library

The East Mountain Library is located at 487 NM 333, Tijeras, New Mexico 87059 in Bernalillo County Commission District 5.

Bernalillo County is seeking public input on a current proposal to rename the East Mountain Library in honor of long-time sheriff’s deputy Tomas “Tom” Herrera.

Deputy Herrera began his law enforcement career in the East Mountains in 1943. He retired as a Bernalillo County sheriff’s sergeant in 1982 and passed away in 2001 at the age of 84.

Herrera was well-known and loved for his passion and dedication to his job as a law enforcement officer. Those who knew him say he took his work to heart, taking very good care of residents who lived in the East Mountains. He did so for 40 years, and for many of those years, he was the only deputy assigned to cover the vast East Mountain area.
