Field Operations and Training

The Operations Division provides service through 16 fire department facilities. There are four staffed fire stations in the North Valley and North Albuquerque Acres area with one substation. There are four staffed fire stations in the East Mountain Area with three substations. The South Valley has four staffed fire stations and the Fire Academy. Our academy provides a networked classroom, training equipment, a roof ventilation simulator, and a search and rescue prop. The newest tool in the BCFD training toolbox is a multi-story training tower.

Each day, we provide a response to a wide range of needs within the community. These include emergency calls for emergency medical services, motor vehicle crashes, wildland fires, structure fires, hazardous materials incidents, mountain rescue, high angle rescue, and river rescue. We also participate in various events including community pre-fire planning, fire hydrant inspections, and various public service events.

Every day, there are 10 staffed engine companies, two staffed truck [ladder] companies, 11 staffed rescue companies and two regional battalion commanders. This entails a daily minimum on-duty staffing level of 57 firefighters, paramedics, lieutenants, captains and battalion commanders.

Other available apparatus include six tenders, otherwise known as water tankers. These units provide up to 2,500 gallons of water that can be brought to incidents in outlying areas of the county where there are no fire hydrants. In addition there are seven Type 6 engines, otherwise known as brush trucks, available for response to fires in difficult terrain. A Type 3 engine (brush truck) was purchased to enhance our ability to respond to incidents primarily on the Pajarito Mesa area of the South Valley, but is also available for the East Mountains.

The department participates in five areas that are considered special operations. These include wildland firefighting, aquatic rescue, hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction, and training. Each of these areas is led by a team of highly trained and motivated members of the fire department.

The Training Division has four full-time instructors that provide training and special operations needs. The academy has a training engine and houses Squad 51, BCFD's heavy rescue unit. Another specialized unit is an airboat used for river rescue and bosque fires. Hazardous materials response equipment is also based at the fire academy.
