The Risk Awareness Program is a collaborative effort with the New Mexico Association of Counties to help all member Counties reduce injuries, lawsuits, and other claims. Weekly content is distributed to every supervisor to review with their staff. Each work group is expected to take 10-15 minutes a week to discuss the topic and make suggestions for loss control improvements. Topics will generally apply to all staff. On some weeks, employee groups receive topics specific to their jobs, such as Law Enforcement, Detention, Mechanics, Public Works, Fire and Rescue, etc. Reducing losses, raising awareness for all employees, and saving money is the goal.
Bernalillo County has a goal for fiscal year 2014 to reduce injuries by 5%. This reduction could be worth up to $87,500 in cost savings per fiscal year. In addition, the County is also set to receive a $18,000 rebate on Workers’ Compensation premiums for successfully implementing the Risk Awareness Program in FY14. That’s over $100,000 of potential savings for avoiding injuries.
The variety of topics includes:
- Cost and Consequences of loss
- Risk Control Culture
- Accident Causes and Prevention
- Hazard Observation
- Lifting and Material Handling
- Emergency Plans
- GHS – Global Harmonization System of Safety Data Sheets
- Fire Extinguisher use
- Defensive Driving
