The South Valley Safe Routes to School project consists of constructing pedestrian safety improvements on County roadways serving Kit Carson Elementary School and Ernie Pyle Middle School. It will construct standard curb and gutter, header curb, sidewalks, crosswalk improvements and pedestrian warning signage on Byron Avenue SW, Citation Street SW, and McEwen Court SW. Road reconstruction and drainage improvement work will be needed on McEwen Court to accommodate the installation of curb and gutter and sidewalk. Installation of a pedestrian (HAWK) signal and crosswalk with refuge median will be installed on Isleta Boulevard near McEwen Court SW.
Depending on the timing of approvals from NMDOT, Public Works intends to coordinate construction of the sidewalk project with a drainage project on Byron Avenue during summer 2013. Otherwise, in order not to disrupt school activities, construction of sidewalks adjacent to school properties may not occur until summer of 2014. Construction work on McEwen Court SW and Isleta Boulevard SW may take place during the school year.
$500,000 in Safe Routes to School federal grant from NMDOT
