BernCo Animal Care and Resource Center to Host “Dogs Playing for Life” Training

The BernCo Animal Care and Resource Center has been awarded a grant to host a “Dogs Playing for Life” training seminar at the center. It will take place from Friday, Dec. 13 through Monday, Dec. 16, 2019. Due to the training, the BernCo Animal Care and Resource Center will be closed to the public on Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14.

The grant was awarded to Bernalillo County by the Petco Foundation in conjunction with Dogs Playing for Life, an organization that works with animal welfare staff and volunteers to improve enrichment for dogs by implementing doggie playgroups which have been proven to help with socializing, reducing anxiety, and overall behavior of dogs in a shelter environment.

“We are grateful to be hosting this doggie playgroup training and are honored to receive the grant from Petco Foundation for Dogs Playing for Life to the train our staff and volunteers in this innovative technique,” says BernCo Animal Care Services Director Misha Goodman. “This will result in a more positive environment for dogs during their stay at the shelter. It will improve social interactions and will better prepare dogs for life in their new forever homes.”

Doggie playgroups provide both mental and physical stimulation for dogs in the shelter. The playgroups help staff to get to know the dogs better, making it easier to match dogs with their potential adopters.

Dogs Playing for Life has worked with numerous shelters throughout the United States including the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care & Control, Maricopa County Animal Services, The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas and Dallas Animal Services.
