BernCo Commission Approves Balanced 2016 Budget

    Andy Lenderman

The Bernalillo County Commission on May 12 approved a balanced 2016 fiscal year general fund budget of $257,057,510. The budget covers public services such as the Bernalillo County Fire Department; Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office; Metropolitan Detention Center; road construction and maintenance; parks and recreation; economic development initiatives and other programs, and covers the fiscal year that begins July 1, 2015 and ends June 30, 2016.

The 2016 fiscal year budget as developed meets the objectives in the county’s strategic plan and ensures that the county maintains its recently reaffirmed AAA bond rating.

Bernalillo County currently employs about 2,500 people.

Public Safety makes up about 54 percent of the general fund budget in its current form and is the largest expense. The second largest category is Public Works at 14 percent, followed by Community Services and Finance at 11 percent each.

The budget must be submitted by June 1, 2015 to the State of New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration and approved before being finalized.
