Hey cowboys and cowgirls, it’s time to strap your boots on and get ready for the Third Annual BernCo Bernie’s Sheep Day and First Impression Youth Day Rodeo, Saturday, Aug. 6 at Bernalillo County’s Dennison Park Rodeo Grounds in the South Valley, 7001 Coors Blvd. SW.

The event will run from 9 a.m. ‘til the sheep come home.

There will be rough stock and timed events in the youth rodeo. Events include barrels, poles, flags, goat tying, steer dobbin’, bull riding, calf riding, mutton busting, stick horse and more.

Age categories are 6 and under, 7 – 9, 10 – 13, 14 – 18 and an open division for team roping, ribbon roping, breakaway and chute doggin’. All events are free for the youth to participate but pre-registration is required, just go online to www.FIRC.bravesites.com. There is a 20 contestant cap per event.

Cowboys and cowgirls can also see sheep shearing demonstrations, enjoy pony rides, visit a petting zoo, and shop with artisan vendors.

Come out and meet the real BernCo Bernie sheep. This is a free event for the community.

  • Weekly crafts, outdoor activities, and experiments will be offered to deepen your discovery of the natural world. Each visitor can make a journal and crafts to take home.   • Join Dara Saville, founder of Albuquerque Herbalism, for a photographic slideshow on medicinal plants and landscapes of central New Mexico. Learn about the properties of some common healing herbs in our area and sample a few herbal remedies. Explore the local landscapes including the Chihuahua Desert, Sandia Mountains, and the Bosque and see how these dynamic places are evolving and what it means for our selected medicinal plants. Workshops are free, but space is limited and participants must register below or call (505) 314-0398.
