Bernalillo County Open Space strives to provide families with meaningful ways to get outdoors and explore the local environment.

The natural world offers children and their families a wonderful resource for creative, inquiry-based learning by providing experiences for children to become careful, intentional observers who will grow into stronger readers, writers and scientists.

Family Fun Days

Visit Bachechi Open Space on Sundays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for Family Fun Days where Cottonwood Gulch educators provide theme-based hands-on learning stations to explore nature’s wonders. This is a great time to bring a picnic, get fresh air and exercise. Nature Packs are also available these days.

Nature Packs Project

Nature Packs are kid-sized backpacks filled with themed-based materials proving families with ways to explore the natural features of Bachechi Open Space. Families can investigate birds, bugs, track, wetlands and more. The packs come with all the things you need including guides, hands-on supplies, and activity sheets. Families can either check out a Nature Pack on Sundays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Bachechi Environmental Education Building, or reserve a pack in advance. Packs are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. To reserve a Nature Pack, call 505-314-0421.

Hands-on Exhibits at the Gutiérrez-Hubbell House

The Gutiérrez-Hubbell House is a wonderful place for families to learn about the rich history and culture of the area. The property features outdoor interpretive signs along a trail near a scenic acequia. There are also indoor hands-on exhibits featuring a children’s room, mercantile and more. This is a great way to take a trip back in time and consider what life would have been like for families from the types of goods that were sold and bought to daily chores.

Geocaching is Family Fun

Bernalillo County Open Space offers two geocache challenges: BernCo Bernie and Burque Birding GeoTrek. Geocaching is a great family activity that will get you outdoors on a fun treasure hunt. Families who complete the challenges by visiting all the geocaches will receive a one-of-a-kind trackable geocache coin. Visit the BernCo Bernie geocacher site at BerncoBernie.com to learn more about these challenges and how to geocache.
