BernCo’s Gutierrez-Hubbell House Joins National Register of Historic Places

    08/27/2015

Bernalillo County’s Gutierrez-Hubbell House History and Cultural Center has been named to the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places.

This historic property features a restored hacienda and outbuildings, as well as a working farm in the heart of the South Valley along the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro.

The designation results from a nomination completed by the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division of the state Department of Cultural Affairs. It recognizes the property as worthy of preservation for its historic significance in the areas of architecture and transportation.

Located at 6029 Isleta Blvd. SW, the Gutierrez-Hubbell House is one of the crown jewels of Bernalillo County’s award-winning Open Space Program, and features outdoor education classes, workshops, special events and more throughout the year.

“Bernalillo County and the Hubbell House Alliance have worked for many years to restore and promote this treasured property, which offers a window into New Mexico’s fascinating history and culture,” says County Commission Vice Chair Art De La Cruz.

“We envision the Gutiérrez-Hubbell House History and Cultural Center as a vibrant and engaging community gathering place that educates New Mexico children and families through an inspiring, thriving, preeminent museum and farm,” says Flora Sanchez, chair of the Hubbell House Alliance.

The first phase of the house was built in the 1850s by the Hubbell family along the Camino Real, the major trading route between Mexico City and Santa Fe. Bernalillo County purchased the property in 2000 and later renovated it.

The property is owned by Bernalillo County and managed in conjunction with the nonprofit Hubbell House Alliance.
