Bernalillo County is always looking for volunteers to help with a variety of projects on the Open Space properties.

The most effective way to volunteer is to become a Master Naturalist volunteer. Open Space staff also welcome groups or organizations who want to volunteer for a one-day workday. To learn more about these opportunities, contact the Open Space Coordinator at (505) 314-0398 or calangan@bernco.gov.

Volunteer Appreciation

Every year the county acknowledges a couple of stellar volunteers. In 2015, the Open Space Program acknowledges Master Naturalists Susan Smith, Stephanie Long and Marty Peterson. Susan Smith participated in the first year of the Master Naturalist Program and has been active ever since. She currently is the coordinator for the Carlito Springs Volunteer Cohort, helping to organize volunteer workdays to restore the historic gardens and orchard. Stephanie Long also participated in the first year of the program. Her initial project as a volunteer was to investigate bear activity at Ojito de San Antonio Open Space. Since then, she has gone bear crazy and helped to start the Sandia Mountain Bear Collaborative where a group of agencies and local organizations are researching bear corridors, population and diets as well as educating the public about responsibly living among bears in the Sandia Mountains. Marty Peterson has been a long-term volunteer with the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center engaging APS students in the outdoors. He also reconstructed a bear skeleton for the 2014 Bear Fair. Marty has led a number of workshops for BernCo Open Space on Dutch-oven and camp cooking. Bernalillo County thanks these stellar Master Naturalist Volunteers for their dedication and contributions.
