Tanya R. Giddings is the Assessor for Bernalillo County, which encompasses the greater Albuquerque metropolitan area and is the most populated county in the state of New Mexico. 

 As Assessor, she oversees the assessment of a parcel count of over 280,000 and a net taxable value of $15.1 billion.  Tanya was initially unanimously appointed in January, 2013, by the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners to fill an unexpired term, and was subsequently elected to a four-year term in 2014. 

Tanya has dedicated her time in office to the fair and equitable assessment of all properties throughout Bernalillo County. Her top priority has been to instill public confidence and trust in the Assessor’s Office as well as increasing public education, communication and transparency.   Under her administration she has established quality control measures and enhanced technology in order to ensure the most up-to-date information and valuations are recorded for all properties throughout the county.  She initiates public outreach through community meetings and educational forums aimed at sharing information with property owners, including veterans and seniors that qualify for property tax exemptions or a valuation freeze. As Assessor, Tanya works to ensure that the Assessor's Office is focused on providing a high level of customer service to the hard working families and residents of Bernalillo County.

Prior to her appointment as Assessor, Tanya served as the Government Relations Officer for the University of New Mexico.  Her entire career has been committed to public service, community outreach, education, economic development and advocacy.  Tanya has navigated large institutions for the betterment of the community while serving with the University of New Mexico, the New Mexico State Senate, the State of New Mexico Personnel Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Albuquerque Police Department. Her professional career, however, initially started in 1993 with the Bernalillo County Assessor’s Office. Having come full circle over the past 20 years later, Tanya has demonstrated strong leadership in both the public and private sector; all while promoting state and federal public policy issues that benefit local communities.

Tanya was born in Albuquerque and is a fifth generation New Mexican.  She comes from a large family, and carries those family values with her as a servant to her community and State.  She attended both parochial and public schools in Albuquerque, NM - where she went on to earn an Associate in Liberal Arts Degree, and then a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a concentration in Law and Government from the University of New Mexico.  Tanya currently serves as a committee member on the Finance, Pensions and Intergovernmental Affairs Policy Steering Committee with the National Association of Counties; a member of the Assessor Affiliate with the New Mexico Association of Counties; and a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers. 

The Office of the County Assessor determines the property value of homes, businesses, and other taxable property in Bernalillo County. The office also prepares the tax roll for the county treasurer on real property (land and improvements), personal property (business equipment), livestock, and mobile homes.

The priorities of the Office of the County Assessor are to maintain trust, integrity and transparency to the public; and is dedicated to updating technology and policies, as well as providing hands-on assistance to taxpayers. 

The assessor has the following responsibilities:

  • Locate all taxable property in the county and identify the ownership
  • Establish a value for all property subject to property taxation
  • List the value of all property on the assessment roll
  • Apply all legal exemptions

The assessor does not:

  • Compute property tax bills
  • Collect property taxes
  • Establish property tax laws
  • Set rules by which property is appraised

Enacting Legislation:
County Assessors shall determine values of property for property taxation purposes in accordance with the Property Tax Code [Chapter 7, Article 35 to 38 NMSA1978], the articles of the New Mexico Constitution and the regulations, orders, rulings and instructions of the department. They shall also implement a program of updating property values so that current and correct values of property are maintained and shall have sole responsibility and authority at the County level for property valuation maintenance, subject only to the general supervisory powers of the director.
