Bernalillo County Economic Development works to protect taxpayers and foster business start-up, expansion and retention in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Simultaneously, the department partners with Albuquerque Economic Development and the City of Albuquerque to support out-of-state recruitment efforts and generate jobs.

For companies requesting financial incentives, we diligently review through multiple evaluations the eligibility and business success feasibility of any prospective project asking to be considered for financial incentives. We also determine to the best possible level of certainty the risk factor to the taxpayer for any project brought to the table.

When a project has been deemed a credible investment, we explore any and all possible financial incentives available locally or at the state to assist that company. 

We also: 

  • Engage out-of-box thinking to develop the most mutually beneficial opportunity for the taxpayer and the company
  • Have transparent conversations with county management and elected officials regarding the project(s) and share all possible best case / worst case scenarios so that conclusions are reached with all the information available

For existing and fledgling businesses, we coordinate free educational programming through commission-hosted business summits held throughout the county and meet one-on-one with businesses to discuss their ideas/challenges and serve as resource/referral agent to address.

We also:

  • Assist companies in navigating through the various county departments so that they can expediently find and respond to business operations and practices (such as zoning and planning)
  • Attend business networking events to meet small business owners and develop relationships with them

  • Commissioner Wayne Johnson is pleased to announce BernCo’s “Bolster Your Business with Contracts from the Government, Educational Institutions and the Military,” a free seminar aimed at helping small businesses learn more about these types of contracts available in our community. Small business owners, entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders are invited to understand more about the ins and outs of successful bidding on these kinds of contracts, and how to service them.
