Karen L. Montoya - Biography
Bernalillo County Assessor, Karen L. Montoya,
is in her second term as the only woman to ever hold this elected office. Ms. Montoya brings extensive experience and knowledge to the office of the Assessor. As a veteran county employee, she has worked in the Assessor’s Office from 1991 to 2004 and is well versed in the areas of agricultural valuation, real estate appraisal, residential and commercial valuation and assessment administration.
Other past experience in appraisal includes, working as a Senior Appraiser with the New Mexico State Property Tax Division from 2004 to 2006. Since her inception into public office in January 2007, Assessor Montoya has made it her priority to maintain trust, integrity and transparency within the Assessor’s Office.
Under her administration, the Assessor’s Office has evolved in many areas over the course of her tenure. Top initiatives carried out by the Assessor included increasing the use of updated technologies, the integration of new policies and providing hands-on assistance to the average taxpayer.
As a New Mexico Certified Appraiser, Assessor Montoya served as Chair of the County Valuation Protest Board and is a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers.
Assessor Montoya was also the Vice Chair of the New Mexico Association of Assessing Officer’s June 2007 to June 2009 and she is currently the Chairwomen for the Property Tax Force Committee. Moreover, Assessor Montoya has successfully completed course work at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque’s Technical Vocational Institute and the International Association of Assessing Officers to qualify as a New Mexico Certified Appraiser in 2000, the highest designation awarded by the state. The Assessor continually attends County College Courses through New Mexico State University and is a proud graduate of Del Norte High School.
Through her dedication and commitment, Assessor Montoya embodies the true meaning of a public servant. Assessor Karen L. Montoya is a proud native of New Mexico and has two beautiful daughters.
