2/23/2010 Bernalillo County Water Level Project
On February 1, 2010, Bernalillo County launched a new groundwater level monitoring project. Some areas of the County, particularly the East Mountains and North Albuquerque Acres, are heavily dependent on domestic wells for water supply and rapid water level declines are occurring. The County wants to be able to monitor water levels in those areas and be able to advise area residents when such conditions occur. A downloadable copy of the information flyer and a copy of the application/participation agreement are available by clicking under the “Current Projects” list in the right side menu of this page.
The County is particularly interested in wells located in the East Mountain Area located more than 1 mile away from NM 14, throughout North Albuquerque Acres, and in the North Valley. Wells will be selected from locations more than one mile in distance from other wells being monitored. However, all well owners within Bernalillo County are welcome to apply. If a new well is being drilled, well repairs are being performed, or an existing well is being permitted, and the well owner is willing to install, at their cost, either a measuring tube or airline with gauge. The County will waive payment of the County’s well permit fees (a $75 value) and will provide sampling and testing for initial required water quality analysis (a $400 value) if accepted for participation. Monitoring can also be performed using a sonic device that does not require any installations into the well, or by using a thin, steel surveyor’s tape to take the measurement. For wells being measured using the sonic meter or tape, only a waiver of the permit fee (a $75 value) will be provided. Voluntary participation of existing, previously permitted wells, and public supply wells will also be considered, although no fee waiver or routine sampling services will be provided for their participation.
