Selection Process
Thank you for taking the time to consider an exciting career as a Corrections Officer at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC)! At MDC, we believe that our employees are the most critical element driving the safe and successful operation of our facility. We are committed to hiring only the highest quality candidates who are dedicated to serving the residents of Bernalillo County as part of the law enforcement community.
Our comprehensive screening and selection process is made up of several elements that allow us to evaluate your knowledge, experiences and abilities in relation to the position of Corrections Officer. Some of the steps in this process include, but are not limited to:
Submission of an Application
The first step in expressing your interest in a position as a Corrections Officer is to submit an application for employment. You may do so via the Internet at https://hr.bernco.gov/jobs/ or in person at the Bernalillo County Department of Human Resources located on the 4 th Floor at Civic Plaza (Phone: 505-468-1500). Your application will be pre-screened and forwarded for MDC to review.
Personal Information Questionnaire
Prior to your interview, you will be asked to complete a detailed Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) containing much of the information needed to conduct a thorough review of your employment, personal and criminal history records. You will also be required to provide a number of documents verifying your identity and education at this time. The PIQ packet and related documents must be provided in their entirety in order to move forward with the selection process.
Oral Board Interview
The oral board interview is a structured interview conducted at the facility by the MDC Recruitment team. This is a formal interview and applicants are expected to dress and present themselves professionally.
Background Investigation
The background investigation is a comprehensive process to assist MDC in determining your suitability as a prospective employee. This process includes, but it not limited to, a full screening of your criminal history records, verification of previous employment, work references and personal references. As this process is very detailed, it may take up to two weeks to process your particular file. Please be available to provide information and assistance to our Recruitment Team should additional information be required throughout the process.
Physical Agility Testing
MDC is currently in process of developing physical agility standards for the position of Corrections Officer. We believe that these standards will ensure that each employee will be able to conduct the duties and responsibilities of their job in a manner that promotes good health and safety at all times. While there are no pre-employment physical agility assessments in place currently, prospective candidate should be aware that the Training Academy incorporates physical training into its daily activities and cadets must be willing and able to participate in such training.
Medical Examination/Drug and Alcohol Testing
Once you have passed the initial screening process for the position of Corrections Officer, you will be required to undergo a pre-employment physical examination as well as a drug and alcohol screening before your final offer of employment can be made. This screening is conducted by a provider determined by the County of Bernalillo and includes, but may not be limited to, a screening of your vision, hearing, heart and blood work. |
