Hubbell House Alliance Volunteer Opportunities

A precious Bernalillo County historical site in the South Valley needs your help every third Saturday of each month through October. Organizers say if you’re willing to volunteer your time raking, digging, and pruning small tree limbs, you’ll get a FREE LUNCH and all the fresh air, exercise, and camaraderie a body can stand.
Starting Saturday, March 18, at 9 a.m., a small yet dedicated army of volunteers descended on the 10 acre Hubbell-Gutierrez House site at 6029 Isleta Blvd. SW to work on a nature trail, heritage orchard, bird refuge, vineyard, and open space for wildlife. The next volunteer workday will be held Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The mid 1880’s Hubbell house and its surroundings were once a famous trading post, sheep ranch headquarters, post office, and home along the Camino Real. The Saturday “Hands-On Days” are sponsored by the Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Department (which purchased the property in 2000 for approximately $600,000) and the non-profit Hubbell House Alliance. Participants are encouraged to bring hand tools such as shovels, rakes, and large pruning shears as well as hats, sunscreen, gloves, and sturdy shoes. Each Saturday “Hands-On Day” runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“It’s an exciting project for the South Valley—something we can really be proud of,” says Hubbell House Alliance spokeswoman, Irene Kersting. “We don’t have too many buildings that are of an historical value and this one is.”
Other “Hands-On Days” are scheduled for May 20, June 17, July 15, August 19, September 16, and October 21, 2006. For more information, call the Hubbell House Alliance at (505) 244-0507.
