Music Workshop
Self-Management for Artists: Making a Living without Losing a Life
6-time Grammy nominee John McCutcheon has been a mainstay of the American Folk Music Scene for nearly forty years. In that time he has released 32 CDs, 4 books, instructional materials, DVDs, toured the world and maintained one of the broadest fan bases of any musician in the country. And he has been completely self-managed.
Come join this engaging and generous teacher in a workshop designed for the independent artist making his/her way in this Brave New Economy. There will be discussion about promotional materials and strategies, product marketing, emerging technologies, audience development, vision and mentoring, and surviving with a balance of both optimism and hard-edged realism.
As important as the business “angle” of the artist’s work is, McCutcheon’s workshop also touches on the oft-ignored areas of rehearsal and creative activities, balancing touring and home life, financial planning and, in general, what John describes as, “making a living without losing a life.”
McCutcheon will tap his own experiences, those of his peers and colleagues, as well as those of participants themselves. Depending on time and workshop size, there will be critique and interactive mentoring.
Audio and videotaping is allowed. Participants should bring examples of promotional materials and any other items they’d like feedback and discussion on.
