The Bernalillo County Commission has approved a ban on some fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the County. The ban applies to the sale and use of missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets and ground audible devices.
“What we look for is anything that shoots sparks and pieces outside a six feet circle and/or higher than 10 feet in the air, and products that may pose a hazard by falling or tipping over during operation,” says County Commission Chair Alan Armijo.
The severe drought conditions and the potential risk to life, property and the environment prompted the ban. Some of the fireworks ban covers the areas east of Louisiana Blvd. to the west face of the Sandia Mountains, from San Antonio north to the Sandia Indian Reservation, all the East Mountain area and areas within 1000 feet of the Rio Grande Bosque and wildland areas.
County Commission chair Alan Armijo, Bernalillo County Fire Chief John Garcia and Fire Marshall Chris Gober will speak about the fire danger, the fireworks ban and give a fireworks demonstration to show which ones are not prohibited.
