The mission of the Traffic Engineering Program is to provide the unincorporated areas of Bernalillo County with safe, effective, and efficient traffic control systems and devices which are clear and concise, of high quality, reliable, and minimize travel time, inconvenience, and expense to the traveling public and taxpayers.
Traffic Engineering plans, installs, operates, inspects, and maintains traffic control devices in the unincorporated areas of Bernalillo County. Those are the parts of Bernalillo County outside the Albuquerque city limits. The department is responsible for 51 signalized intersections, 55 school flashers and traffic control devices on 719 miles of roadway, including over 19,400 road signs, 1270 street lights, 13 miles of guardrail, 278 miles of road striping, 702 traffic calming devices, 10 warning beacons, and 3 illuminated crosswalks. In addition, Traffic Engineering personnel review county projects and conduct studies on existing county infrastructure, to improve and optimize travel on county roadways.
