Neighborhood association members throughout the county this past year worked together to solve unique issues in each of their areas. Public safety and crime prevention remain a top priority on association agendas year round.
In response to public inquiries, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department is formalizing its Neighborhood Watch Program. The Sheriff’s Department is committed to a community policing philosophy which works on problem solving through partnerships with individuals, community groups, and businesses to fight crime and improve the quality of life for the residents of Bernalillo County. The Neighborhood Watch Program, based on community policing, is a proven method of addressing crime. Residents are asked to be proactive in reporting crime, supporting their neighbors, and taking preventative measures.
The Sheriff’s Department has developed an updated comprehensive resource guide for residents who would like to initiate a Neighborhood Watch Program. The guide provides valuable information including, but not limited to, personal and child safety, identity theft, safety on the internet, and crime prevention measures. In addition to the guide, policy and procedures have been developed for the administering of this program.
Neighborhood Coordination is working with the Sheriff’s Department to make Neighborhood Watch assessable to residents in the unincorporated area of Bernalillo County. The guidelines for initiating a Neighborhood Watch will be posted on the Bernalillo County website, at www.bernco.gov
. For a starter packet or if you have questions about the program, please contact Bernadette Miera with Neighborhood Coordination at 468-1279.
