Bernalillo County Fire Department (BCFD) crews in the East Mountains have contained a two-acre wildland fire at 584 Juan Tomas Road and NM 217. The fire was started when an electrical transformer sparked and fire spread from the electrical pole to the grass below.
BCFD crews from Stations 43 and 41 fought this fire in the midst of 20 to 35 mph winds. A red flag warning is in effect today. With these sustained winds, this fire could have become much larger if not for the efforts of these crews.
The U.S. Forest Service has taken over mop-up operations at this point and will keep watch to make sure the fire does not flare up again.
