Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver has reacted quickly to the recent embezzlement charge against a Recording and Filing employee.
“When I was made aware of the incident by staff, we immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Department, the County Attorney, the County Accounting Director and the State Auditor. We found that Mr. Valencia had made several manual adjustments that showed the documents had been filed and the deposits were made, but there was money missing. A self-generated audit was immediately produced showing all the adjustments that had been made by staff,” says Clerk Toulouse Oliver. “We carefully checked all manual adjustments and cross checked that with actual deposits. At this time, I can assure the public that, outside of the questionable transactions by Mr. Valencia, all other adjustments and deposits are in order.”
“Staff has met with experts from Tyler Technologies, the company that supplied the software for deposits, and they have removed the manual adjustment option for all employees, with the exception of top management,” says Clerk Toulouse Oliver. “Mr. Valencia resigned on Monday and I want to assure members of the public that this type of behavior will not be tolerated and that measures are firmly in place to prevent this from happening again.”
