The Bernalillo County Commission this evening approved a formal agreement that paves the way for 600 new jobs through a new customer support center operated by the Lowe’s home improvement company.
The commission voted 5-0 to approve $150,000 each in Bernalillo County and state economic development funds that will allow the company to improve and renovate a 63,000 square foot building at 6301 Jefferson Blvd. N.E.
Lowe’s plans to invest more than $15 million in the project.
Bernalillo County’s Economic Development Department and Albuquerque Economic Development Inc. led the way in negotiating with the North Carolina-based company to locate the new jobs in Albuquerque. Albuquerque’s skilled workforce, location in the Mountain time zone and support of New Mexico officials were among the many factors that influenced the decision, the company has said.
The goal of the project is to create 600 new jobs in Bernalillo County by the end of 2013, company officials have told the county.
The new center will provide multiple support functions for Lowe’s, including customer care, store support, internet sales support and repair services for customers and will complement the company’s existing Customer Support Center located in Wilkesboro, N.C.
The formal agreement approved at tonight’s regular commission meeting is governed by the state Local Economic Development Act and supporting county ordinances. This framework allows the county to partner with qualified businesses that have the potential to create jobs in Bernalillo County.
The commission in December approved an industrial revenue bond issue of up to $16 million, which will allow the company to abate certain taxes.
