The Bernalillo County Fire Department is in the middle of wild land fire training for the entire department that includes classroom and practical training and a pack test (a timed walk wearing a 40 pound pack). In the past, firefighters took a refresher course that resulted in a basic wild land certification. At the conclusion of this training, the entire department will be certified as advanced wild land firefighters.
This year, the training includes members of the BCSO helicopter team practicing water bucket drop preparation and crews from the Bernalillo County Public Works Department who are training with firefighters to determine the need for tractors, front end loaders and water tankers in a wild land fire.
