County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver has been notified by advocates for marriage equality that demonstrations are planned on Valentine's Day, Tuesday, February 14, in support of same-gender marriage in New Mexico.  The Clerk has been made aware that some same-gender couples will attempt to obtain marriage licenses from her office and potentially from other county clerks across the state.

In advance of this protest by supporters of marriage equality for all New Mexicans, County Clerk Toulouse Oliver wishes to remind those same-gender couples who would like to obtain marriage licenses that, at this time, the County Clerk has been advised that New Mexico law prohibits county clerks from issuing such licenses.

"I sincerely and most hopefully look forward to the day when couples of any sexual orientation can enjoy the same rights and benefits as heterosexual couples in New Mexico.
Until that time, however, I have been advised that it would be against New Mexico law and my oath of office to knowingly issue a marriage license to a same-gender couple.  I wholeheartedly support the advocates for marriage equality in their efforts toward progress for those civil rights,” says Clerk Toulouse Oliver.

Valentine's Day is the most popular day of the year for marriage licenses to be issued.
