Bernalillo County Public Works Division will begin planned safety improvements for the Bridge Boulevard and Isleta intersection on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 at 9:00 a.m.
The construction project is expected to take four months with the most severe traffic impacts happening at the initial phases of construction. Next Monday, the construction contractor, TLC Plumbing and Utility, will restrict northbound Isleta Boulevard to one narrow lane at the intersection. This phase will most likely last about six weeks. La Vega and Goff can be used as northbound alternate routes to get to Bridge Boulevard.
“An intersection that is safe and a park that is beautiful will be the end result of this construction project,” says Commission Chair Art De La Cruz. “Keeping those goals in mind and for the safety of the road crews, we are asking for the patience of all those who travel along these two roads during the project.”
For the duration of the project, there will be intermittent single lane closures on both eastbound and westbound Bridge Boulevard. Restricting to a single lane in each direction will take place on weekdays only, Monday – Friday; only one eastbound lane after 9:00 a.m. and only one westbound lane before 3:00 p.m. each day.
This project realigns the existing intersection to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety. Also included in the project will be construction of a plaza area, adjacent to the South Valley Gateway Park, where a portion of the intersection currently exists. Roadway improvements will include curb and gutter, pavement, roadway striping, traffic signalization, street lighting, and sidewalk. The park improvements will complete the plaza area. The total cost of the projects is approximately $1.1 million.
