The Bernalillo County Commission has voted to delay action on a pending amendment to the county code that would require inspections of older septic systems in an effort to stop pollution.
The commission voted unanimously at its regular Tuesday meeting to delay action on the matter until the Sept. 11, 2012 meeting.
The proposal would require inspections of older septic systems once they are 30 years old. If the inspection reveals a failing septic system, the homeowner would be required to fix the problem to protect groundwater and public health.
If the system is working, then no changes are required and the next inspection would occur five years later.
County staff had organized eight listening sessions around Bernalillo County to take input from residents. The county’s Environmental Health Office intends to summarize the many public comments on this issue and continue to research ways to pay for septic system upgrades.
