Commissioner Michael C. Wiener extends an invitation to an open house showcasing the MDC Sewing Enterprise at the Metropolitan Detention Center on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 12:00 pm. The program, which incorporates 13 sewing machines, allows inmates, through the work program, to produce uniforms, linen and mattresses.
The Board of County Commissioners approved funding for the first phase, which began November 4, 2010. This new initiative is the first step in the direction of allowing other work or vocational programs within the MDC to succeed. Additionally, this project provides the inmates with marketable vocational skills.
The MDC currently spends over $200,000 a year on inmate uniforms, and has looked to cut that cost through this ground-breaking venture.
“This work program, currently in its early stages, has created a win-win situation,” saysCommissioner Wiener. “The work and final product provided by inmates will eventually, substantially offset some operational costs at a facility that houses more than 2,500 individuals each day and provides hands-on experience for those participating”.
