Visiting a booth at the health fair, getting the inside perspective about the formal proceedings of a commission meeting or taking a hike on a prescription trail, all of these activities are happening this week in Bernalillo County during the monthlong National County Government Month celebration. This year’s theme is Healthy Counties, Healthy Families.
Bernalillo County is highlighting a different area of health each week. The focus of week two is the physical and intellectual aspects of health. The link between the body and mind can exert a positive influence on one’s health and quality of life.
Here are the event/activity details:
- Shadow a Commissioner/ April 10/One Civic Plaza NW: High School students will shadow commissioners to learn more about county government by attending a County Commission meeting, getting a tour of key government offices and spending one-on-one time with their respective commissioner. Participating schools include Albuquerque High School, Rio Grande High School, Early College Academy, La Cueva High School and East Mountain High School.
- “Feria De Salud” (Free Healthcare Day) / April 14 /10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. / National Hispanic Cultural Center/1701 4th St. SW: Bernalillo County will have a booth at the health fair to provide important information about county health programs and services.
o Prescription Trails “Get Up and Get Moving”

for the full listing: Healthcare providers write prescriptions for walking for their patients based on their current physical condition and to treat and prevent a number of chronic conditions such as diabetes, depression and high blood pressure. The prescription trails vary in fitness levels and distances so that everyone can get up and get moving.
In addition to the public events, county employees and members of the community will participate in several activities that spotlight county services, substance abuse treatment facilities, Earth Day activities and more.
