Members of the public can get a preview of the county’s proposed budget for the next two fiscal years by attending public hearings on April 30 and May 1-- Monday and Tuesday of this week.
“I believe it’s important to be good stewards of public resources,” says County Manager Tom Zdunek. “Our staff is presenting a realistic budget that’s designed to meet the critical needs of the community we serve.”
County elected officials and department directors will present their individual budget proposals to the Board of County Commissioners. The board could approve the final budget for fiscal years 2013 and 2014 as early as the May 8 County Commission meeting. The new fiscal year begins July 1.
“Dissecting the county’s budget in the public arena is government transparency at its best,” says Commissioner Wayne Johnson. “I encourage people to become engaged in the process to understand how their money is being spent.”
Bernalillo County’s general fund operating budget is $230 million. A breakdown, department by department, is available on the county’s website at www.bernco.gov
The hearings will be broadcast live on Gov-TV 16.
The hearings will take place in the Vincent E. Griego Joint Chambers at One Civic Plaza NW, starting at 8:30 a.m. both days and continuing until 5 p.m. Budget hearings could continue on Wednesday May 2, if more time is needed for the presentations.
