The Bernalillo County Commission is investing $2 million in the design and construction of new fields and a permanent home for the North Valley Little League.
The commission on Tuesday approved the investment in four new fields and a parking lot on property the county already owns on Edith Boulevard in the North Valley.
“North Valley Little League has a long and proud tradition, and this community deserves quality fields for the future Valley Vikings to play,” Commissioner Michelle Lujan Grisham said. “I fought hard for this investment and I’m happy for the families of the North Valley.”
The North Valley Little League has been looking for a new home since being notified by its current landlord of plans to develop the property at their current location near Griegos Road and Rio Grande Boulevard N.W.
Bernalillo County owns 10.8 acres at 4001 Edith Blvd. N.E. The property is currently used as a storm drainage facility. However, the county’s Public Works Division is working with local governments and federal agencies in an effort to improve the property’s drainage and prepare it for use as Little League fields.
The new fields are expected to be ready in 2014. The total cost of the project is expected to be about $3.8 million.
Bernalillo County currently manages 28 Little League baseball fields across the county at six locations.
