The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has given an Award of Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting to Bernalillo County. This is the county’s first publication of the Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) and is for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011.
“Winning this award in our first year publishing the PAFR shows the continued level of excellence that Bernalillo County consistently attains in financial reporting,” says Bernalillo County Commission Chair Art De La Cruz.. “In keeping with the goals of transparency and great customer service, making these financial reports available to the public is very important.”
The Popular Annual Financial Report was created to give the public a snapshot of Bernalillo County’s finance division and showcases their excellent work in being good stewards of taxpayer monies.
“There were many hours of intensive work involved in putting this report together and having that work recognized by our peers is quite an honor,” says Bernalillo County Accounting Director Jeff Lovato.
Each year, a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is prepared by the Accounting Department of the County Finance Division. Bernalillo County has won numerous awards in the CAFR category. That document is nearly 200 pages long and includes a very detailed accounting of the county’s financial picture. The PAFR is a 15-page condensed version of that document, in a format that is easy to read and understand by those not in the financial field.
The GFOA gives out the Awards of Outstanding Achievement in CAFR and PAFR to encourage government agencies to produce financial reports that promote transparency and financial excellence.
