Commission Chair Art De La Cruz and Bernalillo County officials today announced the destruction of a former drug lab and major cleanup of a public nuisance property on Metzgar Road in the South Valley.
County zoning inspectors and law enforcement found evidence of a meth lab, open storage of auto parts and inoperative vehicles, trash, junk and animal waste in the home in a 2011 inspection.
The county has since received a court order to demolish the house and clean up the property, which zoning officials described as a public nuisance.
“Bernalillo County is committed to enforcing common-sense zoning regulations to protect our neighborhoods and improve our quality of life,” Commission Chair Art De La Cruz says.
The woman who owns the property is elderly and not living at the home. She worked closely with the county and agreed to the court order which authorized the destruction of the house and cleanup of the property.
“Bernalillo County’s zoning team is dedicated to working closely with the community to solve problems and ensure compliance with our zoning code,” says Nano Chavez, director of the county’s Building, Planning and Zoning Department.
De La Cruz and Chavez directed the cleanup crew to begin earlier today.
The cleanup is being performed by a private contractor. The county is placing a lien against the property to be reimbursed for the costs of the cleanup.
