Commissioner Wayne Johnson and the Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Department will be distributing 33 pairs of custom designed, one-of-a-kind TOMS shoes to local children, Wednesday March 27 at Los Vecinos Community Center.
The ‘Giving on a Shoestring’ project is a joint effort between Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation, theMetropolitan Detention Center (MDC) and community businesses that donate money to purchase the shoes. MDC inmates paint artistic designs on each pair of shoes. Every shoe is unique.
The shoes are given to children who qualify for free or reduced cost programs at Bernalillo County’s community centers. The county plans to provide free shoes to children at other county community centers as businesses continue to donate funds for the project.
