Suncore Photovoltaics, Inc., a leading provider of Concentrator Photovoltaics (CPV) solar modules in which EMCORE holds a 40% equity interest, and EMCORE Corporation (NASDAQ: EMKR), a leading provider of components and subsystems for the fiber optic and solar power markets, along with PNM (NYSE: PNM), the primary electric utility company in New Mexico, announced a special ribbon cutting ceremony for a 2 megawatt (MW) Solar Farm at the Eubank Landfill site outside of EMCORE’s corporate headquarters in the Sandia Science & Technology Park. The event is scheduled for 10 am on May 7th.
The Eubank Landfill Solar Array project with EMCORE was supported by PNM’s solar incentive program and is the largest commercial distributed power generation project in the State of New Mexico. This special ceremony commemorates the upcoming start of full operation of the solar farm which will supply power for EMCORE’s Albuquerque corporate headquarters facilities. The Eubank Landfill Solar Array is a pioneering solar energy project that transforms a former landfill into a clean energy producing site that relieves energy grid demand in Albuquerque while supporting the local economy. The site features Suncore’s Gen-3 CPV solar systems in combination with traditional silicon PV solar panels installed over 17 acres leased from New Mexico State Land Office. The Suncore CPV modules incorporate EMCORE CPV solar cells developed and manufactured in Albuquerque.
Speakers for the event include PNM CEO Pat Vincent-Collawn, Bernalillo County Commission Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins, New Mexico State Land Office Commissioner Ray Powell, The Honorable Mayor of Albuquerque Richard J. Berry, Suncore CEO Dr. Charlie Wang, EMCORE President and CEO Dr. Hong Hou, and Sherman McCorkle, Lead Independent Director from EMCORE’s board and Chairman of the Sandia Science & Technology Park Development Corporation.
“Bernalillo County is proud to once again provide the tools for economic development and lead the way on job creation in Central New Mexico,” Commission Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins says. “The county approved up to $13 million in industrial revenue bonds to help make this project a reality. Jobs are the No. 1 priority for Bernalillo County and I’m pleased to see our investments bearing fruit on a great project that brings both clean energy and jobs to Albuquerque.” The industrial revenue bonds allow the company to abate certain taxes. Taxpayers will not finance the bonds.
“The New Mexico State Land Office is proud to partner with EMCORE to establish New Mexico’s largest distributive solar array,” said State Land Commissioner Ray Powell. “Since the original lease arrangement with EMCORE was signed during my first term as State Land Commissioner, more than $1 million has been earned for the public school children, universities, and hospitals of New Mexico.”
”This project is a great example of how businesses and homes throughout the state are expanding solar energy using the PNM solar incentive program,” said Pat Vincent-Collawn, PNM Chairman, President and CEO. “Our incentive program for customer-owned solar has been ranked top in the nation on a per capita basis and continues to grow at strong levels thanks to projects such as the Eubank Landfill Solar Array. My congratulations to all of the parties involved for seeing this significant project to completion.”
“EMCORE is very pleased to co-host this ribbon cutting ceremony with our joint venture Suncore Photovoltaics and PNM. The clean energy generated from this solar installation fulfills approximately 20% of the power requirements for our two buildings.” said Dr. Hong Hou, Chief Executive Officer for EMCORE. “The project represents the careful planning and cooperation between EMCORE, Suncore and PNM with our state and local government offices. We’d like to thank Maggie Hart Stebbins, Bernalillo County Commission Chair; Ray Powell, Commissioner of the New Mexico State Land Office; Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry and Pat Vincent-Collawn, CEO of PNM for all their assistance and cooperation in bringing this project to fruition.” said Dr. Hou.
“Suncore is extremely pleased to lead the development of this pioneering solar energy project in partnership with EMCORE and Folium Energy,” said Dr. Charlie Wang, CEO at Suncore Photovoltaics. “This is our first installation in the State of New Mexico. We brought in over $10 million in investment in this project, and employed many local engineering and construction companies in the design and construction. We are pleased as a new entrant to the local community to make a positive economic impact. We certainly hope our business will grow significantly in the Land of Enchantment with more installations of solar power plants using our state-of-the-art CPV technology. We are very appreciative and pleased to share this moment with PNM and representatives from New Mexico’s state and local government offices.” said Dr. Wang.
