“The EPA’s Brownfields Program has helped many communities across the country, including New Mexico and Bernalillo County, review and clean up environmental hazards and create jobs at the same time,” Vice Chair O’Malley says. “The Brownfields Program is a great opportunity for local governments to access federal funds that can help turn a polluted site into a positive asset for the community.”
Examples of successful brownfield cleanup sites in Bernalillo County include the Sawmill Community Land Trust.
Also, Bernalillo County has received $400,000 to both conduct environmental assessments of contaminated sites, as well as to support training for employees in brownfield cleanup.
To date, the EPA’s Brownfields Program has provided $1.5 billion in grants to communities across the country.
