Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins invites you to join her for the next District 3 art show featuring the work of Luis Olay Perez.
Please join me for the next District 3 art show featuring the work of Luis Olay Perez. This show is the 21st in a series of exhibits showcasing the talent and creativity of District 3 artists.
Luis is carrying on centuries-old of the indigenous tribes of México. He is a fifth-generation member of the Olay family, who are masters in straw and feather mosaics.
The ancient residents of Mexico developed a method of using feather and wild straw dyed to create beautiful religious offerings and decorations.
Luis personally searches for and dyes his own wild straw with insects, vegetables and chemical dyes. Over the design he places a sheet of vellum paper, buttery-smooth paper coated with beeswax, then adheres the straw that must be carefully laid in place, then cut off in appropriate lengths with small spatula. The straw crisscrossing in several directions provides texture and detail to the mosaic. A light varnish is applied to the finished mosaic to hold the straw in place. Sometimes one square inch has up to five hundred pieces of straw. In all, Luis has created hundreds of pieces of art that encompass more than one million pieces of colored straw.
Luis's straw mosaic subjects include: portraits, landscaping, religious, ancestry, cultures, geometry, traditional Mexican, US Southwest and Native American subjects. His work has many won many awards and has been featured in publications in México and the United States.
