Commissioner Debbie O'Malley invites you to the Alvarado Gardens Neighborhood Association's "Joining Hands" art exhibit reception Feb. 20 from 4 - 6 p.m. at the Bernalillo County Annex Building, 415 Tijeras NW. Click for Invitation.
The art exhibit, funded by the Bernalillo County Neighborhood Grant program, was created by the Alvarado Gardens Neighborhood Association in the spirit of resolving issues in the area.
The exhibit narrative explains how the art show brought those in the neighborhood back together.
"Alvarado Gardens Neighborhood is an old neighborhood bounded by the Rio Grande to the west, Rio Grande Boulevard to the east, the Nature Center wildlife preserve to the north and Thomas Village to the south. Many of the homes were built in the 1930s. Alvarado Gardens is a neighborhood of trailer parks, large adobe homes, some small farms, condos, and apartments. There are no businesses but for some artists and craftsmen working at home.
The people in the neighborhood are as diverse as the homes, usually congenial and always hardworking. Together they have worked on many projects and have welcomed and contributed to the All Faiths children’s programs and the Rio Grande Nature Center within the neighborhood.
In the past, contentious neighborhood issues angered residents. Neighbors then sought a project that would bring the people back together and also serve the larger metropolitan area. The idea arose to photographically join hands. A team of neighbors took pictures of the hands of every person in the Alvarado Gardens area. One photo shows the hands alone and another is of the person’s hands holding something important to that person.
This effort resulted in the creation of large vertical panels with a collage of the various images for exhibition and to share the neighborhood story. The association opened with an exhibit in 2011 at the Rio Grande Nature Center and various other locations."
