A budget hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23 from noon to 3 p.m. in the Vincent E. Griego Chambers, 1 Civic Plaza N.W. Public comment is welcome at the hearing. Bernalillo County managers will present the initiatives their respective divisions will undertake for the fiscal year that begins July 1, 2013 and ends June 30, 2014.
The hearings can also be viewed on GOV-TV, or online at cabq.gov/govtv.
The 2014 fiscal year general fund budget is projected to be $237,251,881. The budget covers public services such as the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office; the Bernalillo County Fire Department; Parks and Recreation; Solid Waste and other programs.
Last year, the Board of Commissioners approved a two-year budget plan. This year’s budget hearing will highlight any adjustments to that previously approved plan.
“Public input is always welcome at Bernalillo County,” Commission Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins says. “We’re committed to open government and the budget is the framework for the services we provide to the community.”
Bernalillo County currently employs about 2,400 people.
Public Safety makes up about 52 percent of the budget in its current form and is the largest category financially. The second largest category is Public Works at 15 percent, and Community Services is at 9 percent.
The budget adjustments must be approved by the commission and the state Department of Finance and Administration before being finalized.
