Last night the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners honored a trio of heroes for their life-saving actions during a house fire on June 13.
The board honored Bernalillo County Fire Division Chief Darrell R. Lindsey, Albuquerque Police Department Officer Robert Mitchell and Journeyman/Electrician James Baca of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority for helping evacuate residents from a burning Northeast Heights apartment complex.
Both Chief Lindsey and Officer Mitchell were off-duty when they and Baca noticed flames and smoke coming from the complex.
They worked their way down one the side of the building banging on doors and windows trying to get people out of the complex. As they came to the end of the building, they found a family of four with a baby who were behind a 6 foot chain link fence in the back yard.
The three of them pulled down the fence, allowing the family to escape.
The board presented the three with a Certificate of Recognition.
