Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver on Sept. 10, 2013 acknowledged the efforts of the League of Women Voters of Central New Mexico and their support and participation in National Voter Registration Day. In 2008, six million Americans did not vote because they did not know how to register or they missed their state’s voter registration deadline, according to the U.S. Census. In an effort to make certain that no American is left out of the voting process, September 24, 2013, has been designated “National Voter Registration Day” and volunteers, celebrities and organizations throughout the United States will create a widespread awareness of voter registration opportunities.
A network of a thousand organizations and volunteer registrars operating on the ground and through social media will register tens of thousands of voters in the field and in some states, online. National Voter Registration Day will be an opportunity to put differences aside and celebrate the rights that unite us as Americans.
