Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver reminds eligible voters that Tuesday, September 24, 2013, is National Voter Registration Day.
In 2008, six million Americans did not vote because they did not know how to register or they missed their states’ voter registration deadline according to the U. S. Census Bureau.
“Volunteers, celebrities and organizations from all over the country will be out in force for National Voter Registration Day,” says Clerk Toulouse Oliver.
“This single day of coordinated volunteer, technological and media efforts will create widespread awareness of voter registration opportunities and reach tens of thousands of voters, including those in New Mexico.”
There are currently over 400,000 registered voters in Bernalillo County and the Clerk would like to encourage all those eligible, 18 years or older and a New Mexico resident, to register to vote.
Anyone visiting One Civic Plaza tomorrow, who is not registered to vote or needs to update their voter registration, is encouraged to stop by the clerk’s office located on the 6th floor.
In 2014, there will be 1500 statewide political races and ballot initiatives that will be decided.
“Registering to vote is simple and easy and can be done through the Clerk’s office, the Secretary of State’s Office, at the Motor Vehicle Department or through a variety of partner organizations,” says Clerk Toulouse Oliver.
National Voter Registration Day is made possible by the following organizations which provided coordination and support of the event, including the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance education Fund, Bus Federation Civic Fund, Fair Elections Legal Network, League of Women Voters, Nonprofit Vote and Voto Latino.
It is recognized and supported by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and more than 400 additional organizations nationwide.
